# BIN Lookup API Documentation

This is the documentation hub for BINLookupAPI. Use one section for the task that you have.

| Section | Use it for |
|---------|------------|
| [API](/docs/api-reference/) | The request format, the response fields, and the error codes. |
| [Support](/docs/support/) | Billing, the dashboard, API keys, the team, and account settings. |
| [Guides](/docs/guides/) | Working examples in curl, JavaScript, Python, PHP, Java, C#, and Go. |

## What the API returns

BINLookupAPI returns data for a Bank Identification Number (BIN). A BIN is the first 6 to 11 digits of a payment card number.

You can use a response to:

- Identify the card network and the issuing bank.
- Identify the funding type: credit, debit, or prepaid.
- Read the country that issued the card.

The dataset has 3,289,919 BIN records from 231 countries. Records use 6 to 11 digits. 88.7% of the records are longer than 6 digits. Send 8 or more digits when you can. The result is then the issuer range, not only the parent range.

## Data updates

| Cadence | What changes |
|---------|----------------|
| Each week | Small updates. These updates add new ranges and correct records. |
| Every 4 weeks | A full refresh. This refresh also removes withdrawn records. |

Each refresh is on the [changelog](/changelog/). The API always returns the current data. There is no file to download.

## Endpoints

Send every API request to `https://api.binlookupapi.com`. The dashboard host does not accept API requests.

| Method and path | Use |
|-----------------|-----|
| `POST /v1/bin` | Look up one BIN. |
| `POST /v1/bins` | Look up 1 to 2,000 BINs in one request. |

## Example

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.binlookupapi.com/v1/bin" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"number": 42467101}'
```

A success response has this shape:

```json
{
  "mode": "live",
  "data": {
    "bin": "42467101",
    "scheme": "visa",
    "funding": "debit",
    "brand": "VISA",
    "category": "CLASSIC",
    "country": { "code": "PL", "name": "POLAND" },
    "issuer": { "name": "ING BANK SLASKI SA", "website": null, "phone": null },
    "currency": "PLN",
    "prepaid": false,
    "commercial": false
  }
}
```

Plans BLAPI-150KPM and BLAPI-500KPM also return a `meta` object. See the [API reference](/docs/api-reference/#the-meta-object).
